A media briefing was held on 6th Feb. for the 27th World Day of the Sick at Archbishop's House. This international event, instituted by the Catholic Church, will be coming to Kolkata, India this year. The last time the celebration was held in India was at Vailankanni (Tamil Nadu) in 2002. The purpose of ‘World Day of the Sick’ is to sensitise persons, especially Church-run healthcare institutions and civil society to the need to assure the best care for the sick and to help those who are sick take comfort.
The Kolkata celebrations will be attended by a delegation from the Vatican led by H.E. Peter Cardinal Turkson, Prefect for the Vatican office of healthcare. Pope Francis has also appointed H.E. Patrick Cardinal D’Rozario, Archbishop of Dhaka, Bangladesh, as his Envoy for the Kolkata events. Church leaders and healthcare professionals from other parts of Asia and India will also attend as delegates.
